Misc. HDD Sheriff technical notes

Problem:
1. CD ROM has disappeared after installing HDD Sheriff (PCI):

Reason:
PCI version of HDD Sheriff, like all other PCI drivers, needs to set the PCI driver first. However sometimes PCI PNP mode isn't supported. When that happens, the PCI driver doesn't set up and Windows operates on DOS compatible mode next to CD-ROM, Hard Disk, and Floppy Disk Drive exclamation mark appears.

Solution:
Internal: Reinstall the .INI file. Go to the Device Manager. Make sure you are in Supervisory Mode, under Disk Protection take the driver off the Install Diskette or download it off the website. Reboot in Supervisory Mode.
External: With the latest install diskette, your system is automatically booted into Supervisory Mode upon first reboot. If this did not happen get the latest install off the website or alternatively, boot into Supervisory Mode manually.

Problem:
2. Error message "Cannot open a necessary driver file"

Reason:
In order to install HDD Sheriff we have to change some information on ESDI_506.pdr file under c:\windows\system\iosubsys. By changing that information some computers might have difficulty loading driver files.

Solution:
Internal/External: Go to Supervisory Mode, download the .INI patch off the website, reboot

Problem:
3. Windows 2000 version, Windows NT version- HDD SHERIFF EXTERNAL VERSION ONLY-installation went fine but cannot locate the card for the second booting or "Initializing HDD Sheriff…" Doesn't show up.

Reason:
For NT version of windows, it does not load from the DOS mode. It directly executes Windows. Therefore HDD Sheriff does not have chance to load its necessary file such as SetMBR from the DOS mode.

Solution:
Make sure you have the latest setup diskette. After the installation processes leave the diskette in for the second booting. In case if it gives you the error message "this is not a system disk" then put in your own booting diskette and press Enter. After A:\ prompt, insert HDD Sheriff Setup diskette and type from A:\ 'autoexec.bat" and press Enter. Make sure your system boots into Supervisory Mode so that the necessary files can be saved in the appropriate Windows directories

Problem:
4. Installation went fine but cannot detect the hardware PCI, ISA, EXTERNAL. "Initializing HDD Sheriff…" does not show up.

Reason:
Anti-virus programs such as Norton NT virus, V-shield, write files into the BIOS CMOS-virus setup or boot record in the BIOS. The Sheriff needs to write into Sector Zero in order to work Properly. You turn on your Anti-Virus solutions once Sheriff has been installed.

Solution:
While installing the Sheriff, turn off any Anti-Virus programs. Also check the CMOS setup and disable any virus protection mode or boot record option or similar to that.

Problem:
5. Everything works OK except computer freezes randomly or windows doesn't shutdown.

Reason:
You do not have the latest HDD Sheriff drivers.

Solution:
Get the latest drivers off the website or off the latest install diskette which can also be found off the website.

Problem:
6. Error message "Emm386 not installed. Unable to set frame base address."

Reason:
This has nothing to do HDD Sheriff. It just means that you used up all 640cache memory in your computer by loading up other programs, including HDD Sheriff.

Solution:
Under the C directory find 'Config.sys' right click and check the 'archive' and leave 'read only' blank if it's not already done so. Open it with 'Notepad' you will see a line that says "device=c:\windows\himem.sys /testmem:off" or similar to that. Below that line type this: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
If the problem still persists try typing that same line either very top or different position.

Problem:
7. Notebook- HDD Sheriff 2000 EXTERNAL. Cannot detect the hardware.

Reason:
Some newer model notebooks let out less than 2.8 volts to the parallel port. However HDD Sheriff's external version card requires more than 2.8 volts. Also the possibility of CMOS setup mis-configuration

Solution #1:
Exchange with new product that supports less voltage.

Solution #2:
Go into the CMOS setup and change parallel mode option to enable. And under address, change the mode to ECP/EPP

Problem:
8. Even after the formatting of the hard-drive "Initializing HDD Sheriff…" still comes up and does not reinstall properly.

Reason:
The older version of HDD Sheriff 4.0 or 4.5 versions needs to be uninstalled from the DOS mode by pressing F10. However if you didn't uninstall from DOS mode and just uninstalled from Windows, the information still remains in the 0 sector. Thus, even after formatting the hard drive, the message "Initializing HDD Sheriff…" might come up. However for HDD Sheriff 2000 version you and simply uninstall from Windows.

Solution #1:
1) Leave the HDD Sheriff card in.
2) Reboot
3) Find MSDOS.SYS from C:\
4) Right click on the file
5) Do not check anything on READ ONLY box but Check WRITE box
6) Double click on the file
7) Select Notepad to open.
8) Under Option type:
LoadSheriffPrg=1
9) Save and exit
10) Reboot the computer
11) Put HDD Sheriff disk in and type
"setmbr"
12) Reboot
13) When you see HDD Sheriff Initializing press F10
14) Type in the password if it doesn't work type in "Sheriff"
15) Choose remove HDD Sheriff

Solution #2:
Fdisk the hard drive and erase any partition

Solution #3:
Use Norton DiskEdit to erase any information from sector 0-100 or more.

Problem:
9.Error message "esdi_506.pdr has caused a problem would you like to continue to load windows Y/N"

Solution:
Follow SOLUTION#2 on question #2.

Problem:
10. Error message "This Setup Diskette is not compatible with HDD Sheriff card"

Reason:
This card is probably the older version of PCI card

Solution:
Exchange with the new version of HDD Sheriff and get the latest install off the website.

Problem:
11. By installing and uninstalling HDD Sheriff, there are extra drives created.

Reason:
If you have selected "Typical Install", it automatically sets D drive for you as your data partition. If you have installed it a couple of times, you might have more than one extra drives.

Solution:
Follow SOLUTION #1 on question #8, step 1 through 14 and then for step 15, go to partition manager and you should be able to erase extra drives.

Problem:
12. Windows blue screen VXD error messages.

Solution:
Reinstall HDD Sheriff or reinstall other programs might conflict with HDD Sheriff.

Problem:
13. You are unable to install the Sheriff because there is a conflict with the motherboard.
Ie> you have an ASUS Motherboard and the Sheriff Asic Chip has not been pre-flashed.

Reason:
This is the Asus patch. The problem that this resolves is when HDD Sheriff is not recognized by the motherboard.

Solution:
In order for this patch to work properly you must do the following:
1) Obtain the ASUS patch file from Interware Systems
2) Install the card on a non-Asus Motherboard machine.(preferably Intel).
3) Insert the boot disk that you created into the non-Asus board machine.
4) Boot the non-Asus board computer; the disk will flash the necessary files to HDD Sheriff.
5) Move the HDD Sheriff card back to the Asus board machine and complete install process.

Problem:
14. PCI Card Only. Error reading "EMM386 not installed unable to set page
frame base address." Or "EMM386 not installed xms manager not present" or "EMM386 not installed unable to set page frame base address".

Reason:
There is a hardware conflict between your machine and the Internal Sheriff.

Solution:
Exchange the PCI Sheriff with an External Unit

Problem:

15. With Asic flashed card for Asus Motherboard fix is giving a Windows Blue Screen

Reason:
Recently Jungsoft added another function to the HDD Sheriff (ASIC) card. The ability to hide the non-booting partition. This added function was a flash upgrade as well as a software upgrade, the software can be safely installed regardless of the flash upgrade. Cards with the newest flash will cause some installations of Windows 98 Windows 2000 to blue screen.

Solution:
The card will need to be flashed with "ASIC Blue Screen Flash" found on our website. Instructions on how to create and use the flash disk are included in a READ ME enclosed in the .zip file. This flash will create an English language interface on the HDD Sheriff ASIC card.

Problem:
16. Sheriff not booting into Windows. A quick "Sheriff Installation" message comes up but a DOS prompt appears.

Reason:
Dos. sys and then C; prompt. This occurs in Windows occasionally.

Solution:
Make sure you are in Supervisory Mode. Add the following at the end
of the AUTOEXEC.BAT…………………WIN.COM
